Hi All,
Please stay hydrated and as cool as possible for the next few days!
Last week we got trees planted in the New P bed expansion! P01 got Banana, Tamarillo, Guava & Pineapple; P03 got avocados; P08 got Mulberry, Papaya, Loquat & Myrciaria Cauliflora and P02 got Lychee, Dragonfruit & Sapodilla planted this past week! The planting started during the week and the Saturday crew worked their magic to get the rest of the prepared holes planted and started another 15 holes for the rest of the trees!
There was some protecting of the melons and squashes going on last week. AB25’s melons were eaten from below and hollowed out…those gophers! York fed them to the worms and helped me get some gopher screen underneath our pumpkins in AB29 to protect them from the same fate as the melons. Not all pumpkins survived though and LA fed one of them to the worms. CL got the rest of the melons in AB25 up off the ground by utilizing some strawberry baskets and hanging some from the trellis. In K07 I ended up placing a board under some cantaloupe and placed a screen over them.
Volunteer tomato plants were gleaned out of beds N13, AB28 & M01. EL started gleaning out the basil plants from H01 as well. We need to start thinking of winter veggies cause they are on their way! Ryan worked with a couple of volunteers to clean the compost area up a bit and used the plants that were gleaned out to feed the working compost bin. Summer pruning continued for the Orchard and the trees out front. We’ll chip these branches up to use in the FGW compost!
York helped us to stake up some pepper plants in I02, dropped off clean gloves and picked up the next dirty batch of gloves to be cleaned! A few beds were weeded out. In M08 the bitter melon was clipped up along with some cucumber beds. Turns out we also had some cucumbers come on…thank you PB!
Girl Scout Kobika and her dad Marutha stopped by on Friday to get the library box they both worked on filled up! Marutha had stopped by on Wednesday to install it with our volunteer JR. On Friday they worked with Brenda to get QR codes placed on the books, that was Kobika’s idea to help us keep track of the books, and place the books inside the library box. A picture is included below!
All that and we harvested 535.6lbs of produce for our community!
Take care
Lori
