Hi All,
Last week I felt like I was scooped up by a whirlwind and I am not sure if it has let me go just yet! The garden has been busy, busy, busy! Lots of weeding and lots of getting plants ready for the Plant Sale…and everything in between;)
We had 3 groups out last week, Bank of America, Kaleidoscope and Blue Oaks Church! Bank of America got us started helping the Orchard crew to take out the weeds, Kaleidoscope helped to cardboard and wood chip the West side of the Produce Washing Station and Blue Oaks Church helped to continue and I think finish getting the weeds out of the Orchard so the guys can go in and start laying wood chip down!
Bank of America and Blue Oaks Church helped to plant over 3,00 seeds! Unfortunately some mice came in and ate over 600 of those seeds so our Friday crew helped us to rearrange the Hoop Houses in order to keep the new seeds they planted from being eaten by the same mice and helped to reseed each pot. It happens. Both crews helped us to create labels and pots. Bank of America helped to wash and pack the produce for delivery on Wednesday and Blue Oaks Church helped to pot up over 400 tomatoes into their permanent 4” pots!
Go Teams!!!
Kaleidoscope got to take apart some owl pellets Tod and I found! I will be sure to bring them in every shift so all our volunteers can see them! They also helped me to feed the left side of the rotating composter and everyone who came back to do that also took a turn rotating the composter!
RB was back with his weed annihilator! He got to work on the Compost Area over by the large rain barrels. The rest of our Tuesday crew were either in the garden beds trying to keep the weeds at bay or in the Big Hoop House with Qaadira planting the beans and cucumbers for the Plant Sale. AL was out with CL getting the paths by the G beds and behind the A beds cleared out of weeds!
On Wednesday a few of our regular volunteers, CL, KA & CA, planted bed K07 with Yokatta Na greens. KS and some of the Bank of America crew planted bed A18 with Komatsuma greens. RL also got some of the Bank of America crew to help her plant the rest of Ms. Julia’s sun chokes!
Friday crew also got in the Orchard to continue the help with the weeding. Saturday crew found the PLAY group with both Enriques out front continuing the cardboard and wood chip around the South and East side of the office….
Our totals this year for seed planting are:
For; | seeds started by 3/22 |
both | 1304 |
Garden of Grace | 5710 |
Plant Sale | 19749 |
26763 |
This does not include all the potting up we have done as the plants start getting too big for the six packs we started them in. We brought more plants over to the Livermore High School last week for help with holding the plants till we either plant them in the garden or our Plant Sale peeps come pick up their orders!
We harvested 95lbs of produce for our neighbors last week!
Phew…there was a lot happening all over the garden last week and we could not have gotten it all down without all of you helping us with it!!!!
Take care
Lori
