Hi All,
Quick note this week…
Man, busy start to this week and SO much happening in the Fertile GroundWorks garden right now!!! Where do I start on what happened last week….
Qaadira and Kelly joined us for their first Tuesday/Wednesday shifts. Qaadira took on the seed planting/transplanting crews on both days and she lead the crew to clean the tools last Friday! Qaadira and volunteer MB helped Brenda to identify a bacteria MB found in bed L02. For the next few years we will be unable to plant cucumbers, broccolis, cauliflower & cabbages in the bed due to the bacteria. Good catch you guys!
Kelly took a crew of young men out to the New Expansion to prep the ditch we have the pipe in, to be filled. Kelly also helped me out with Kaleidoscope when they came out and it was a great experience for all! Kelly’s crew took out the Redbor kale in bed F01, my crew planted carrot seeds in bed ARB1 and there was a third crew that helped to clean labels! Kelly went above and beyond when he took his crew in to the Little Hoop House to show them the seedlings we have been taking care of:)
Over 700 plants were potted up into 4” containers for the Plant Sale and over 5,000 seeds were planted for both the Plant Sale and the garden! Labels were cleaned, pots were created, inventory taken and about 1,000 lettuce seeds were direct sown into the JAS2 bed, where the strawberry plant stands used to be, from the seeds we did a germination test on 2 weeks ago!
Lots of weeding going but since they are not flowering at this time we are able to use them for compost! In the Compost Area bin #5 was fed with kale, tree trimmings and the weeds-same for bin #2. We are recording temperatures on the compost bins so if you are interested in helping us to keep up that chore let us know!
The plants in the Little Hoop House were sorted out in alphabetical order and the garden plants were moved into the Big Hoop House to keep everything organized. In the Big Hoop House the covers for the Tunnels of Love were fixed as well as some of the covers in the Little Hoop House.
The Orchard Crew planted up the donated trees and continued the pruning. CW switched out an irrigation line in bed G03 and LA fixed leaks in the higher AB beds. Miss C and her mama hid kindness rocks around the garden so keep your eye out for them! The driveway was finished with cardboard and wood chip out front….and SO many other chores were done thanks to all of you that show up:)
All that and 127lbs of produce harvested and sent to our neighbors!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Take care
Lori
